We are introducing cereals back into the farm rotation to try and diversify the farm output and bring some more variety back into farmed landscape.

This is our first crop. Some costello winter wheat. However with crops now only occupying 3% of farm land area in NI it seems there aren't many interested in growing combinable crops here. I can see why with wet summers, small fields and limited access to machinery. But with the climate changing, net zero obligations putting pressure on the livestock sector and availability of grains and straw under pressure I wonder whether others are thinking crops could be making a come back? What do you think?

We're having a go with oats. Cereals work well in a crop rotation with flax we are told. The first year we tried them after the flax we got a good crop but come harvest time we couldn't find a contractor with a small enough machine to get up our lane - so we bought an old combine and promptly bogged it! Second year the crows got most of them. Hopefully this year will be third time lucky.

We have a substantial dock burden on the farm. Last year it all got slightly out of hand...

This year we have sheep on the farm for the first time in a generation and they are doing an excellent job so far...

We've also discovered we have a good population of green dock beetle which are currently munching their way through a lot of the spring growth...

It’s a case of do what I say not what I do! We would spray with a tractor sprayer trying to be selective on a stop start basis but in a grazing situation I would advise use a weed wiper after its been grazed but that’s difficult where it’s for cutting and that’s the more likely place they’ll be

What are people's plans for pasture regeneration over the next few years and how will you go about it?

Early May . Multi Species supposed to establish better in Spring but this is my first experience with it. Spray, power harrow and sow for several years now I think it keeps the nutrients nearer the surface rather than ploughing them down. Sub soil if we think there’s a pan but doesn’t release as much carbon
