@Andy Kenny Some pro-active farmers in the Ballinderry - great results from this project - low cost solutions for farms - this needs to be built into the Farming with Nature scheme. The systems can also be built to provide a temporary reservoir to catch a slurry spill.
Autumn Lawn weed and feed? A fertiliser used on lawns and sports grounds/golf courses containing the same ingredients as farm fertiliser and no restrictions for its use. Currently available in garden centres/supermarkets. How much has been sold/used in the catchment area annually at times when farmers cannot sow similar products. Should it be withdrawn from sale say early September???
@Andy Kenny My Dad has 3 ideas: Barley Straw to stop it forming, Comfrey to stop the pollution and Recycling into fertiliser. @Mark Horton or @Ian Marshall might want to say more about how comfrey can help.
Yes it's not good to see. Apparently it's the Zebra mussel that is cleared up water in the surface waters allowing light into the nutrient bank further down. I always thought the Lough was fairly well mixed with the wind turbulence it gets but perhaps not. A big legacy issue that's hard to fathom. We've never see the river run so clean on the River Maine here in recent weeks but the migratory fish run has been small this year.
